One Day at Sea (March 7, 2016)

Reading Length: Grab ‘n’ Go Coffee

Kristin Reporting!

I started the day going to the craft class where I got to do some Japanese ink painting. I made a piece of art for my new Australian friends, Andrew and Nikola, and a card to send to Scott! Here is a picture of the art piece that I made for Andy and Nik. It is a cherry blossom tree with Nik and Andy’s names carved into the trunk in Katakana.

(As of April 23, 2016, the card I made is now on its way to Scott, so I don’t want to spoil it for him by posting an image of it!)

Davin and I dropped some postcards from Australia at the purser’s desk for mailing out in the port of Manila tomorrow. They charge $2.95 to mail each piece of mail (postcard or letter).

Next, D and I got a snack for our first meal. I ended up eating 3 different kinds of desserts and they were all good for a change!

1PM was Choir-- it was the last one before the big concert! Yikes! I'm glad I made some recordings so I can do some music study tomorrow evening in the shower!

After choir, D and I had lunch at the "Golden Lion Pub". He had bangers and mash and I had fish ‘n’ chips. They were both good, but the Bangers needed peas!

Between lunch and dinner I wrote emails.

We tried three different times during the day to do laundry and finally found a washing machine on our third attempt around 7pm. There is a bit of a laundry culture that springs up on cruise ships, where people actually camp the washing machines. (Anyone familiar with MMO terminology will know what camping the washing machines means!)

People just sit and stand inside the tiny laundry room (which comfortably fits 3, but you’ll often find 5 or 6 people in there!) and chew the fat! Half are watching their laundry wash, and the rest are waiting for the machines to come free!

I’m sorry but I have better things to do, even on vacation, than spend hours waiting in front of a washing machine. I always think that people who do such things must have really boring lives, and don’t value their time whatsoever. It’s absolutely insane.

After today’s experience, we have learned to check for open washing machines between 6pm and 7pm when most people are headed to dinner and/or feel it is too late to get their washing completed before the 9pm close time.

We skipped the sit down dinner to do laundry, and ate dinner from the pasta station. I tried to make fettuccine and chicken (one of our Trader Joe’s family staple meals!) by pairing white cream pasta with breaded chicken and ketchup. It worked for the most part but the pasta was too creamy. It was bound to be different somehow. I don't think I'll bother to try that again.

We are also thrilled that the buffet on the Queen Elizabeth has chips and salsa every day, and we continue to take advantage of that. We loaded up on chips and salsa again this evening!

I messed around with some watercolor paints this evening to perfect my artwork from this morning. Working with water color was harder than it seemed it would be. Luckily, as a precaution to prevent disaster, I smartly experimented on scrap paper first!

I wrapped up the day with some bill paying and Babylon 5.

Tomorrow we will be exploring Manila, Philippines!
